30 – Rock The Casbah – Clash (August 1982)
In fairness to the Clash, 1982 was a very good year indeed, but even so no way on Earth were there 29 singles better than this one. Sorry, I’m not having that.
29 – Only Happy When It Rains – Garbage (September 1995)
You may have noticed that I like upbeat, optimistic numbers.
28 – Oh Well – Oh Well (October 1989)
Make the most of this, it’s as near as this list gets to including Fleetwood Mac.
27 – Dr. Mabuse – Propaganda (April 1984)
Yeah, I could have gone with Duel instead, but the only really good version of Duel is Jewelled and that wasn’t the single. I went with this one instead because it’s miles better than Duel.
26 – I Want More – Can (October 1976)
Proof if you wanted it that underperforming singles weren’t just confined to the eighties.
25 – Chewing Gum – Annie (September 2004)
Why wasn’t Annie a big star? This one’s good, but Songs Remind Me Of You had Top Three written all over it, so what happened? Didn’t even make the Top 100. Ridiculous.
24 – Flowers Of Romance – Public Image Ltd. (April 1981)
Time for a singalong, yeah?
23 – Spiralling – Keane (September 2008)
Just as Sting has done one decent single, so too have Keane. And what a tune it is. More like this please, Keane, and less of that Somewhere Only We Know toot.
22 – Never Let Me Down Again – Depeche Mode (September 1987)
Oh, come on, this is me we’re talking about. Did you really think Depeche Mode weren’t going to be on the list somewhere?
21 – Brilliant Mind – Furniture (July 1986)
If you’re going to be a one-hit wonder, there are far worse ways to do it than this.
