It’s a new year, and God I hope the songs are better this year than they were in 2016. Good news folks, You Don’t Know Me gets things off to an encouraging start – it bounces merrily along like a rabbit wearing deeley-boppers. More like this please, 2017… oh dear. Call On Me immediately drops the speed back down to midtempo, but… but… it’s not as bland or inoffensive as most of the stuff that I had to put up with last year. So far so good, now then, what can JP Cooper offer? Actually, another half-decent tune, now that I mention it. What is going on here? It seems as though NOTHING can stop this year from being good!… and here’s Ed Sheeran. Right. (Your narrator sighs in resignation as he realises what’s to come.) Castle On The Hill isn’t bad as it stands, even if it does sound like the tune was chucked in a bin by U2 and retrieved by Mr Sheeran. It is, however, roughly three hundred times better than Shape Of You, which has a whimsical, intensely irritating melody, so naturally this spent 14 weeks at Number One and Castle On The Hill didn’t. Honestly, if Shape Of You didn’t have Ed Sheeran’s name attached to it, would it have even been a Top Ten single? I must admit, I have my doubts, but that’s marketing for you.

So. All that entered the Top Ten in one week, and that leaves Paris as the sole entry for the last week of January. I like this one, even if it does have a bit of a stop-start feel to it. Tell you what, it comes to something when the single that was Number One for three months is comfortably the worst entry of the month, doesn’t it?
