Rockabye is unusual. It’s a song by a band that plays their own instruments, the lyrics tell a story (a single mum bringing up her kid) and it’s not a charity single or an X-Factor winner’s single. For most other times of the year, none of those would be especially notable, but Rockabye hit the top of the chart midway through November and then clung on like a limpet all the way through the rest of the year to become the 2016 Christmas Number One. THAT is what makes it unusual, not to mention one hell of an achievement. It’s also the best Christmas chart-topper since Killing In The Name. Well done, Clean Bandit! Moving on then, and Sexual’s not a bad song either. Decent start to the month, this.

Fake Love doesn’t really do a lot, does it? It sounds to me for all the world like a song that was made up as it was being recorded. Next!

Good to see Maroon 5 are keeping up their tradition of accompanying their songs with entertaining videos. This time they’re Pokemon-esque monsters trying to avoid getting captured. There is a song accompanying the video, but it’s not very interesting so let’s gloss over that, yeah?

Black Beatles is a strange one – it’s got an aggressive tone, which I like, but the rest of it… I’m really not sure. It is at least doing something different to the norm, though.
