SHOUT OUT TO MY EX

I may be misinterpreting the lyrics here, but this does seem to be another in a long line of “Yay for me, I’m the best” songs. On the bright side, the tune’s all right, so at least there’s that, eh?

This Town is nice and everything, but I’ve heard it so many times before. Yeah, it had different names back then and was sung by different people, but it’s the same old song done the same way it’s always been done. It does what it knows will work and really, that’s the kindest thing I can say about it.

24K Magic starts off with a vocoded intro and because it has no choice, it improves from there. And what an improvement – it’s a glorious helping of eighties-style funk.

Starving is an odd one – it starts off as if it’s going to segue into Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car (the guitar motif is that similar) and then it tries to turn into a more dancey affair, gives up and goes back to the guitars, tries again and then gives up altogether. Nope, not for me. Now then, Shout Out To My Ex is much more like it. A pop song that’s not ashamed of being a pop song and with bags of energy to boot. Even the mid-paced parts make it very clear that a faster bit’s on the way and they duly arrive. Girls Aloud in their prime would’ve been happy to have this one, that’s how good it is.
