So, here we are then. After nearly fourteen years I decided to put a stop to my music column for the local newspaper. At the time, it was an easy decision – I wasn’t listening to the Top 40 anymore and the songs I was hearing didn’t fill me with any confidence. Of course, now I’m revisiting these years and actually hearingeverything that was reaching the Top Ten, I have to say, I think I may have been a little harsh. The stuff I’ve heard has, in general, been a lot better than I was expecting to hear. Still, 14 years is plenty long enough to be writing things about songs; bloody good job I didn’t follow the music column with another time-consuming half-baked plan, eh? Anyway, moving on. Drive By is at least four hundred times better than Drops Of Jupiter and if you disagree, well… your opinion differs from mine, which is fair enough. Yeah, that told you. Too Close is also good if you ignore the drum and bassy bit in the chorus – there’s nothing wrong with it except that that sound’s a tad ubiquitous at the moment and the rest of the song’s so different there doesn’t seem to be any need for it. Let’s Go’s above average, but again, it’ll never be a highlight on either Calvin Harris or Ne-Yo’s CVs.

I see Cover Drive have ditched the Mini at last, and they’ve also slowed their music down as well. Makes a change. I’m not sure what to make of Tulisa’s single. It’s not the worst thing ever, but it’s unremarkable enough to make me wonder if it only got to Number One because it was sung by “her off of N-Dubz”.

There’s a good tune trying to get out of Where Have You Been and every now and again it threatens to escape before getting caught and hauled back to its cell. It’s a sad story, really. Live My Life’s OK, but my goodness, Justin Bieber sounds so bored. R.I.P.’s not bad either, and much improved on two years ago when I only heard it on the radio in the background and decided it wasn’t much cop at all. Makes a difference, sitting down and listening to it properly.

Oliver Twist is daft, and we need the occasional daft song in the chart so no criticism from me. 30 Days is the song from the Citroen adver- oh, hang on, sorry, it’s actually the music video, it just happens to have a Citroen prominently placed at the beginning. It’s getting really hard to tell the difference now, you know.
