IT’S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD BUT I CAN SEE IT FROM HERE

Lostprophets

If I was to say to you that the people in charge of the video had a really mad idea and decided to depict the end of the world, something tells me your response would NOT be "Well, that’s the last thing I’d expect them to do." No, what you’d expect is for Lostprophets to play their song while the world ends around them, which is what happens. While most sane people would run for the hills, assume the crash position or grab a towel, Lostprophets take it upon themselves to play us out with lots of noise, guitars and a half-decent tune. To be honest, if the world’s ending there’s not really a lot you can do to stop it, especially if it’s going to crumble away like it does in the video, so why not go out with a song? Besides, this song is a win-win scenario for everybody. If you like it, good for you, but if you don’t then look on the bright side - they’ve finally brought out something new so it’s possible that Radio 1 will finally stop playing Rooftops.

MAGIC

Ladyhawke

This song fully deserves to be a Number One single and anything less would be a disgrace. So there. "But why?" I don’t hear you ask. Well, the video has a flying carpet and a bloke who’s nicked Donald Duck’s clothes, but it’s not down to the video. It’s all about the tune, which is lucky seeing as my job involves reviewing songs. Imagine someone like Little Boots and La Roux getting together to make a song, but that week everything that could go wrong did. On Monday, the recording studio caught fire. On Tuesday, a herd of bison stampeded through the studio. On Wednesday, their cars exploded. On Thursday, they couldn’t concentrate because Lostprophets were playing outside, which meant that on Friday, there was no world left to sell the song to. Given all that, you’d expect them to be pretty fed up and inevitably that would come out in the song, giving the tune an aggressive yet poppy tone to it. Most pop songs say "Isn’t everything wonderful?" This one says, "I know I’m a good song and I don’t really care if you agree" and because it’s not trying to please everyone that’s what makes it so great.
