Cigarette lighters aloft...

I hate dance music sometimes. All those annoying little blippy noises and some prat rapping about "Everybody out there say Yo!". No, go away. Those appalling so-called cover versions and remixes which successfully murder the originals to the point of utter embarrassment. It’s just so naff. And that’s why we must cherish songs like Café Del Mar and this, a truly fine song that fully deserves its lofty status in "the clubs" (dude). You can’t really describe it, like you can’t describe Café Del Mar without whistling it, the medium of newsprint being notoriously difficult in this respect. It’ll put a little smile on your face, believe me, so go out on Monday and buy it.
BROTHERS GONNA WORK IT OUT
Various Artists / Chemical Brothers (album)

We have much to be thankful to the Chemical Brothers for. Setting Sun, which proved that when he’s being co-operative Noel Gallagher can actually be quite impressive, Life Is Sweet, possibly the best thing they’ve ever done and Leave Home, still chucked into Grandstand somewhere on Saturday afternoons. Then there was their decidedly naff remix of the Manic Street Preachers’ Faster which sounded dreadfully eighties. Luckily this is them playing about, on form, with tons of records, some theirs but mainly other peoples’. How nice.
ZORA SOURIT
Celine Dion

Let’s see, how can I make this short and yet to the point? Here goes… It’s exactly what you would expect from the Canadian Ballad-Belter TM only sung entirely in French. You know, sweeping orchestral stuff, starts off like a lamb and then goes off on one in the middle as the wailing guitars kick in only to go all quiet again right at the end. Admit it, you can already see her with the arms raised and fists clenched during the chorus even now, can’t you? Cigarette lighters aloft…
