DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE

Electric Six

Happy New Year to both my readers! After a busy Christmas, what I needed to hear was something relaxing to help me unwind. The title should’ve been a dead giveaway, really. Any hopes I had of unwinding were dashed when the singer screamed “Fire In The Disco!” No chance of a kip, then. “Fire In The Taco Bell!” he roars. I’ve never been in a Taco Bell, but I can guess what they specialise in (not bells) – perhaps the line would have more relevance to British listeners if the line was “Fire In The Little Chef!”. Don’t know, clutching at straws, don’t care, move on. If the first verse doesn’t grab your attention, the chorus will. I swear the bloke’s trying sound as posh as he possibly can while he’s saying the phrase “High Voltage” – he doesn’t quite manage it, but the song made me smile anyway, so good luck to it.

ALL THE THINGS SHE SAID

T.A.T.U.

Brace yourself, this one’s got “controversial” written all over it. It’s a lesbian love song (although you might miss the clues if you’re not fully paying attention). The two singers are dressed as schoolgirls in the video (if you miss the clues in the video you’ll need reminding that when you go outside, the blue stuff above you is called sky and the grey stuff you walk on is called pavement). Now believe it or not, the tune is actually pretty good and doesn’t rely on its lyrics alone. It sounds a bit different to the usual stuff (perhaps because they’re Russian), but then it’s been produced by Trevor Horn and when he’s on form he can make songs jump out from the crowd. This time he’s gone for the quiet during the verses / annihilation during the chorus approach and it works a treat. Hell’s bells, two decent singles in a week!
