LOVE ON THE LINE
Blazin' Squad

“Dear Jim, please could you fix it for me and all my mates to do a soul song (something along the lines of Alexander O’Neal or Boyz II Men would be cool) and make a video of us singing it as we wander round London?” Sorry, but that’s what I thought when I saw the video. They do the song well enough, but it’s a bit samey – you get the feeling that two people could’ve sung the song instead of the ensemble that Blazin’ Squad are. Still, at least they’re not obviously trying to break into the US market by doing their video in the States – (cough) Blue (cough). This isn’t overly special, but it’ll be interesting to see what they can do with a song that’s designed for a group as big as theirs.
YOU AND I
Will Young

I remember, when I was younger (so much younger than today, surprisingly), there used to be a show on BBC 2 called You And Me. It used to start off with coloured blocks revolving into place so that when they stopped they spelt out the name of the show. Fantastic! It was also hosted by a dragon called Duncan. Fantastic again! Reminiscing about an old kids’ TV show has helped take my mind off of this well sung but ultimately forgettable slab of dirge. A result all round, then. Hopefully, his next single will be a double A-side of Words And Pictures backed with Jigsaw.
CHEEKY SONG
Cheeky Girls

“We are the cheeky girls / you are the cheeky boys.” That’s the chorus. I’m not joking. I’m also not recommending it. This is pure, undiluted Europop following in the footsteps of the Cartoons and Aqua and it’s terrible. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
