CONFUSION

New Order

I’ve never done a review based on a white label before, so bear with me on this. For those who don’t know, a white label is precisely that – a plain sleeve and nothing whatsoever on the label. For those who don’t care, I bet you wish you hadn’t bothered reading that last sentence now, eh? There are two 12” singles here, each with three tracks (I even had to guess what speed to play them at – there are no clues here). Firstly, forget the version you hear on Substance. That’s re-recorded, notable only for being far worse than the original (as is the re-recorded Temptation). These remixes use the original as their base. Secondly, these mixes sound nothing like the Pump Panel Mix. 12” number one has two house mixes on side one which are actually very good, although the second mix is just an instrumental version of the first. There’s just the one mix on side two and it’s a bit dark and moody, truth be told. The problem with this one is that just as you think it’s getting going, it stops. Typical. As for 12” number two, well, side one contains exactly the sort of remix that the likes of Fischerspooner and Felix Da Housecat would kill for. It sounds very up-to-date but, at the same time, it also sounds extraordinarily 1980s. It’s also the best remix by a mile. There’s another eighties-esque mix on side two, which is good, but not quite as attention-grabbing. However, side two is also loaded with accapellas and loops from the original so it’s now possible for any idiot to do a remix of their own. How very generous! When all’s said and done, when this comes out I’d recommend it, especially as every remix I’ve heard is better than the original. That’s no mean feat.
