I’M ALIVE

Celine Dion

Not so sure about the song though.

IT JUST WON’T DO

Tim Deluxe

Some songs just have the word Summer written all over them just as surely as Celine Dion’s singles have Bland written all over them (although, to be fair, her latest does have a bit of go in it, but nowhere near enough to make it interesting). As summery tunes go, this is right up there with some of the best. It’s got a samba style sound to it and somebody going la-la-la a lot, but don’t let that put you off as it’s turned out rather well. Besides, it’s nice to have a cheerful song in the Top 10 and if it stops Gareth Gates from getting to Number One, so much the better.

SHOOT THE DOG

George Michael

It seems George Michael has something he wants to get off his chest. It also seems that he’s got himself into an almighty ruck with practically the entire United States Of America. Not by sampling the Human League’s Love Action (they weren’t quite that important a band), but by giving George W Bush and Tony Blair something of a ticking off. He’s released controversial singles before (remember when he released I Want Your Sex 15 years ago and Radio 1 threw all their toys out of their pram?), but he’s never given world leaders a rollicking before. I’m only here to tell you whether the song’s any good though, so I shan’t bother with the rights and wrongs of this particular tactic. Well, the song is good…ish. It’s another upbeat effort from George but it’s got that FastLove-revisited feel to it and doesn’t sound particularly fresh and exciting. Chances are the 2DTV video will be remembered long after the song (especially Professor Liebstrom’s cameo), which isn’t really what it’s all about, is it?
