An Antidote To All Things Westlife.

DEAD STAR / IN YOUR WORLD

Muse

Oh, they’re back then. One thing you can say about them is that at least when you hear a Muse song you know straight away that only Muse could’ve done it, such is their tendancy to get as much milage as possible from the standard singer / guitarist / drummer set-up. Sometimes it sounds just a bit too clever for me (New Born) and sometimes it works really well (Plug In Baby) but at least it sets them apart from the Blink 182s and the Sum 41s of this world, well, that and the fact that their name doesn’t end with a number. Dead Star is somewhere in the middle. It goes along at a fair pace, but there’s something not quite right with it. You know when there’s something wrong but you can’t work out what it is? That’s this song for me. As for In Your World, well, that’s a lot better. It seems slightly better thought out, really. It’s got more of a tune to it and while it still has a couple of dodgy moments, it’s my personal preference out of the two.

The Vines

This makes a really nice antidote to all things Westlife, this does. Of course, that means no Top 10 single for the Vines but I’m sure they can live with that. I don’t know what it is but quite a few proper rock bands have visited the chart lately, namely the Strokes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the Hives and H and Claire (that last one is a lie), so at least the Vines aren’t the only ones flying the flag. As for this song, it buzzes around at a speed that isn’t recommended and that’s really about it. It’s hard to say why, but it’s also rather entertaining.
