Something to light a fire with.

JUST A LITTLE GIRL

Amy Studt

Nope, I haven't heard of her either and to be perfectly honest, when this song started I wasn't expecting great things. To start with you get Ms Studt singing away in a rather childlike fashion over a somewhat twee musical background. God, how depressing. Then suddenly, without warning the entire landscape changes (Radio 2 won't like this bit). Out goes the kiddie-friendly stuff and in comes guitars, drums and our singer has very quickly acquired an attitude and is practically screaming blue murder. Ah, bless. Then it goes quiet again, but this time you know that come the chorus things are going to kick off again and they duly oblige. It might not set the world alight (which when you think about it is actually a good thing), but it is a damned sight better than it has a right to be.

HEY BABY (WORLD CUP REMIX)

DJ Otzi

If that hasn't made you lose the will to live I don't know what will. Think of football commentaries replacing DJ Otzi's dulcet tones and a load of "England fans" singing away and that's it. Lazily done, cynically timed and complete and total pants. If there's a worse World Cup single than this, I don't want to know.

LIGHT MY FIRE

Will Young

I'm trying to find a positive point for this and frankly I'm struggling. It's as though somebody set out with the express intention of turning the old Doors classic into Terence Trent D'Arby's Sign Your Name (No.2, January 1988, fact fans). The end result is about as enjoyable as going to the dentist to have a filling put in and having your arm amputated by mistake. For some reason the words "isn't", "very" and "good" spring to mind.
