Awful film songs.

HERE TO STAY

New Order

It’s a song from a film. That’s not usually encouraging seeing as there’s been some right tat brought out to promote motion pictures lately. You want proof? How about I Believe I Can Fly, Love Is All Around, I Will Always Love You or My Heart Will… no, I can’t even finish writing the name of that last one. Fair enough, some of them were written ages before they were given the Soundtrack treatment, but you must admit there’s some shocking stuff there. Thank God this is good, then. However, seeing as the film’s about Factory Records it stands to reason that they’d put that bit of extra effort in. It’s more dancey than normal, but I suspect that may have something to do with the Chemical Brothers pressing loads of buttons in the studio with them. Mind you, it still sounds like New Order so that’s alright.

QUICKSILVER

The Shining

There’s been a few singles lately that have been deleted by the record companies on the day of release (Doves and the Faithless / Dido collaboration to name but two), which is slightly annoying if you’ve heard it on the radio for weeks and then nip off to the shops to buy it. The worst thing about this method of releasing singles is that it’s never applied to anything that Enrique Iglesias releases (typical). Unfortunately, this single is another one of those to add to the list as there are only 1,000 10” singles in existence. Pity really, because this is excellent. The nearest thing to compare it to would be U2’s The Fly, only a bit longer, with more attitude and a lead singer who’s going for it. This deserves to be a hit, but barring a re-issue it’s not going to happen.
