LET LOVE BE YOUR ENERGY

Robbie Williams

I’m not sure I need to review this one, because putting Robbie’s name on anything these days appears to be a guaranteed licence to print money and whether this single’s good, bad, indifferent or Steps it’s going to be a huge hit anyway. Right, that’s the cynicism out of the way for this review and I feel better for that. Let’s look at the evidence. It’s a rocky number, but it’s a good one – there’s more than one misfire he could have chosen instead of this. It’s one of those songs that you can see becoming a huge live favourite (much like Never Let Me Down Again at Depeche Mode concerts and We Will Rock You at Queen’s), but possibly not one of his biggest hits (fourth single off the album, law of diminishing returns, you know the words, sing along). In fact, it’s a pretty much cast iron guarantee it won’t be as huge as, say, Angels as someone at the record company’s decided to give it a strictly limited release. How rude. If you’re a fan, I advise you to get your copy quick. If you’re not, at least it’ll be gone soon.

STAR 69

Fatboy Slim

The papers are going to love this one. It’s loaded with more f-words than a dictionary, although in the case of this song all the words are the same (guess which one). And just in case you’re wondering what happened to Weapon Of Choice (it’s apparently all over MTV), the video’s on one of the CDs. Skint Records didn’t have to be that generous, but they have. Isn’t that kind? As for Star 69, well, it’s certainly different to Sunset (Bird Of Prey), that’s for certain. If Sunset is a gentle drive through the countryside in an open-top Bentley, oozing charm and sophistication, then this is a dirty great Chieftain tank with an attitude that could start an international conflict at Toddington Services, thundering down a busy motorway either past or (preferably) over slower vehicles and using its impressive arsenal to take out every bridge it comes across. This song’s as hard as nails and it’s high quality merchandise.

LOVIN’ EACH DAY

Ronan Keating

This just sounds like a dancey retread of Life Is A Rollercoaster to me. Slow it ain’t, but uninteresting it most definitely is. Just say no, kids.
