No Popscene. Not alright.

IRRESISTABLE

Corrs

Well, the title’s misleading for a start. Time was when the Corrs were famous because because people used to think “Their songs are really great”. Nowadays the Corrs seem to be famous because three of them are good-looking and the other one wears stupid seventies sunglasses. Pity, that. Mind you, it’s just as well they’ve got looks to fall back on if they’re going to turn out sad, anaemic little driving rock donkeys such as this. There’s absolutely nothing going on here of any interest, in fact it’s that bad that if you end up stuck in traffic on the way home from a particularly bad day at the office and it’s chucking it down outside (not just cats and dogs, but guinea pigs, gerbils and any other household pet), this is exactly the sort of song that you’d expect to be played, you know, just to put the tin hat on the end of a perfect day. I tell you, my huge and loyal army of readers (hello to you both), we deserve better than this.

THE BEST OF

Blur (album)

This’ll do. All things considered though, it does seem very strange that This Is A Low (a fine album track that never found its way on to a single) is included but Popscene (a stunning single that never found its way on to an album) is not. That minor gripe aside, this is a pretty good testament to the band’s talent. There’s the jolly stuff (Girls & Boys), the miserable stuff (Beetlebum), the madder-than-a-love-starved-bunny stuff (Song 2) and the really-really-stupid-but-damned-good-fun stuff (Country House), which ought to keep everybody happy. Quite where that leaves Music Is My Radar is anybody’s guess (No38 would be mine), but despite the fact that it’s not very Blur sounding it fits in with this lot quite well, seeing as the band have tried just about every style of music going and still don’t seem to have found one they really like. There aren’t many Greatest Hits albums around that are actually worth the money, so it makes a nice change to find one where every song is worth listening to. Highly recommended? You bet your life it is.
